About Me
Strategic Analytics for Human Impact
Hi! I’m Garren Moss. A data scientist with over a decade of experience helping organizations make smarter, values-driven decisions with their data. I specialize in partnering with nonprofits and social enterprises working in environmental and social justice, arts equity, and outdoor access, who, like me, believe in equity, transparency, and lifelong learning.
With a Master’s of Science in Business Analysis from Seattle University and a background that spans credit unions, aerospace finance, market research, mortgage analytics, and even co-founding a nonprofit, I bring both technical depth and human-centered design philosophy. My toolkit includes machine learning, data visualization, training, agile project management, and platforms like Python, R, Tableau, and Power BI.
Over the years, I’ve led projects in:
-
Reporting infrastructure and automation
-
Environmental efficiency / emissions tracking
-
Supply chain analytics
-
Data ethics and privacy policy development
-
Customer attrition analysis
-
Strategic reporting for boards and executives
How Curiosity Changed My Career
One early project at Verity Credit Union reshaped how I think about analytics. The credit union had closed its busiest branch and was seeing what looked like increased attrition among those members. I was asked to investigate the trend and while researching different methodologies to apply to the problem, I discovered Survival Analysis, a statistical model commonly used in medical research. Though I would later find out this was not a novel application of the model, the process of going beyond the basic request for summary statistics to fitting the method to the problem was eye opening.
What I found surprised my manager and the marketing executive: when accounting for member tenure and other account behaviors, the "attrition" wasn’t actually worse than other branches. What looked like a red flag was, in truth, a normal pattern and my analysis saved Verity from an expensive retention campaign that wasn’t needed.
That experience shifted my view of the role I play as an analyst from answering questions to asking the right ones. It led me to pursue my master’s degree and guides my approach today: deep listening, context-driven methods, and results that build trust.
